Penrith
Chess Club runs a number of teams in the Cumbria chess league. Each team has
four players, so the whole team can travel in one car.
Matches are usually played on Saturday afternoons.
Teams play the opposition teams twice - once at home and once away. The time allowed for each game is two hours per player for all moves. There is also a county knock-out competition for the Whitaker trophy In 2007-08 the club entered the Club Championship of the Northern Counties Chess Union (NCCU). Progress is reported at the bottom of this page. LEAGUE MATCHES IN 2007-08The club entered three teams in the league in 2007-08. Match results are given below with the Penrith score first. The county website provides the league tables. The A team did well in coming second in the top division. They then drew with Barrow A in the North-South match for Cumbria second place, but lost after the method for deciding drawn games - discounting the bottom board - was used. Details of the match in Andy's log. The B team did well by staying up after its first season in the first division. And the C team in its first season in existence did well by staying off the bottom of division 2. Division 1 North: A Team (Captain: Andy McAtear - 01768 863567)
Division 1 North: B Team (Captain: Dave McMath - 01768 862794)
Division 2 North: C Team (Captain: Andy McAtear - 01768 863567)
WHITAKER TROPHYThis is the county knock-out cup, in which teams are given handicaps related to the grading of the players. In the 2007-08 season the club entered two teams. The 2nd team needed one point against Austin Friars in the first round, but lost ½ - 3½. The story is in Andy's log. The cup 1st team played Kendal in its first match on 27 October and won 2 - 1, after winning the match 3 - 1 and having a point deducted for handicap. More detail in Andy's log. In the next round, the quarter final, the team beat Carlisle with half a point to spare. More details on the match and a controversy or two in Andy's log. But in the semi final the club was beaten by Cockermouth. See the usual place for details. Past years Penrith Chess Club won it in 2004-05 and came second in 2005-06. But we were not so successful in 2006/07. Penrith met Windermere in the first round, won 2.5 - 1.5 and lost on handicap. Windermere, cunningly, had not put up the strong players that we had expected. The county website gives the 2006-07 results (if you scroll down). NCCU CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPIn 2007-08 the club entered the Intermediate section (maximum average grade 125) of the NCCU Championship. The first match, on 17 April, was a preliminary match against Waterloo Chess Club, Merseyside, to see who went through to the first round proper. Penrith won 3 - 1. The next round was against Crusaders of Blackburn. We drew on points and on board scores, but lost when grades were factored in. See Andy's log |
