CHESS NEWS

Of course nothing is more important than our own glowing wins and unlucky defeats. But if you ever want to know what's happening in the broader world of chess, try these sites. Be warned - hours can pass unnoticed.
  • The Week In Chess is one of the best places to find out what is happening in chess internationally: tournaments, matches, games to play through, new books.
  • The Chessbase site doesn't just sell software. It also has some of the most comprehensive news coverage on the web.
  • To makie sure that you don't miss the tiniest chess event, try searching for 'chess' in Google News.
  • If it is effortless updating that you want, Google Alerts will even send you a daily email.

CHESS ORGANISATIONS

FIDE, the World Chess Federation, is the international body for the regulation of chess.

The English Chess Federation oversees national matters. The site includes a list of the grades of all registered English players and a long list of tournaments

There are also details of the annual awards, including the current ECF Website of the Year (and the ECF's first such award).

The website of the Northern Counties Chess Union deals with chess at regional level.

The Cumbria Chess Association does the same for county activity.

Barrow and Cockermouth clubs have their own websites. Austin Friars Chess Club (Carlisle) and Windermere have pages on the Cumbria website.
