1.e4 e6 2.d4 a6 3.c4 b5 The 3 Pawns attack against the St. George defence. Black sacrifices a Pawn for counterplay involving the a8-h1 diagonal.

4.cxb5 axb5 5.Bxb5 Bb7 6.Nc3 Bb4 7.f3 Qh4+ 8.Kf1 f5
Ne7 is "book". This is premature. 9.g3 Daring, but that diagonal! 9...Qh5 10.e5 Ne7 11.Kg2 0-0 12.Nh3 h6 13.Nf4 Qf7+/- 14.Nd3 Bxc3 15.bxc3 Nd5 16.Qb3 Taking aim at the b7 Bishop. [16.c4!? Nb6 17.a4+/-]

16...f4= 17.Nc5?-/+ [17.Ne1=] 17...fxg3-+ 18.c4? [18.Rf1 Ne3+!! Clearance to allow Bxf3 19.Bxe3 Bxf3+] 18...Nf4++/= [18...Nc3! and mates after ...Bxf3+] 19.Bxf4= Qxf4 20.Nxb7 gxh2 21.Qd3 c6 22.a4 [22.Rxh2+/=]

[23...cxb5!? 24.Nc5 bxc4-/+] 24.Kh1=/+ Rg3+/= [24...cxb5=/+] 25.Rf1 [25.Qe4 Rxf3+-] 25...cxb5+/= 26.axb5? [26.cxb5=] 26...d5? I couldn't think of any other way to get my Knight into the game. [26...Ra2!-+] 27.exd6?? [27.Qe2 Ra3=]
27...Nd7+- 28.c5? White misses Qe4! 28...Ra2-+!! For me anyway it's worth !! My intention was to get both Rook and Queen onto the h file. 29.Rxa2 Deflection from h3
29...Rh3+ 30.Kg1 Qh4?
Following my plan, but Qg3+ is even better. [30...Qg3+ 31.Rg2 Qh4 and a quick mate]

31.f4I was so caught up in my plan that I can't recall even considering taking the White Queen. 31...Rh1+ 32.Kg2 Rh2+ 33.Kf3 Qh3+ 34.Ke4-+ Qf5+ [34...Nf6+ is quicker 35.Ke5 Qxd3] 35.Ke3 Rh3+ 36.Rf3 Rxf3+ 37.Kxf3 Qxd3+ Some position! White has R+3 connected passed Pawns for his Queen, but has to be watchful for forking checks.

38.Kg2
[38.Kg4 h5+ 39.Kxh5 Qh3+ 40.Kg5 Qg3+ 41.Kh5 Nf6#] 38...Qe4+ See previous note. 39.Kg3 Qxb7 40.c6 Qxb5 41.Ra8+ Kh7 42.c7 Qd3+ 43.Kh2 Qe2+ 44.Kg1 Qe3+ 45.Kh2 Qxf4+ 46.Kg1 Qxd4+ 47.Kf1 Nb6 48.Rb8 Qxd6 49.c8Q Nxc8 50.Rxc8 Qa6+

Both players had been afflicted by time pressure and so play might have been better. This was a typical Congress game which we both enjoyed. An ex Chess Club colleague of mine said that I played "boring" chess. 0-1
