1.e4 e6 2.Nf3 a6

The St George Defence. Popularised by Michael Basman, it was part of my opening repetoire at the time and led to some very hairy games. I thought I knew it quite well until this game!

3.Nc3 b5 4.d4 Bb7 5.d5 Rather suprisingly, Peter has developed normally up to now, but this was new to me, and proved highly effective.

5...b4= 6.Na4 exd5 7.exd5 Nf6 8.Bc4 Qe7+ 9.Be3 Ng4
[ 9...Qe4 is stronger 10.Bd3 Qxd5 11.Qe2=/+ ]

10.0-0 Peter develops!? 10...Nxe3 11.fxe3 d6 Black is way behind in development. This move provides an outlet for the Queen's Knight, but blocks the f8 Bishop.

12.e4 Nd7 13.Qd2 a5 14.Ng5 Ne5 15.Bb5+ Kd8 16.Qf4
The pressure on f7 forces Black to sustain further weaknesses. 16...f6 [16...Rb8!?+/- ]

17.Ne6++- Kc8
Black is all tied up, with useless K-side pieces and weak squares all round his King. 18.a3 Opening up the a file. 18...Nd7 19.axb4 axb4 20.Bc6 Rb8 21.Nd4 21.Qf5 seems even better 21...g6 22.Qh3 Bg7+- ]

21...Qe5
Hoping White will exchange Queens, but if not, giving the Bishop on f8 somewhere to go. 22.Qd2 Nc5? [ 22...Qe8+- ] 23.Bxb7+ Rxb7 24.Nxc5 dxc5 25.Nc6 Ouch!

25...Qh5 26.Ra8+
That's check!

26...Kd7 27.Rd8#
That's mate! Well played, Peter. 1-0
